In this double workshop with Romy Hood and Gasthaus Kitchen Lab, we will learn with Corinna Mattner and Maya Minder how plants, thanks to their chemical ingredients, leave their traces in the body and on textiles.
In a symbiosis of art, cuisine and design, the two transdisciplinary creators convey a sense of botany, traces, colors, patterns and sensuality.
Using the “bundle dye” technique, in which the flowers and leaves leave their own traces, we make the ingredients of the flowers and leaves visible.
The alchemy of all substances is particularly visible through the art of fermentation. We come from the earth and go back to the earth.
Since the beginning of time, fermentation has been used to provide for the winter, to make vitamins and surplus usable, and also as a remedy for things that have been forgotten.
Many of the plants that surround us have powerful active ingredients, flavors, healing and nutrients. The plant substances, some of which we know as essential oils, others as alkaloids or toxins, are often associated with color molecules and have always been used as messengers in homeopathy.
We will discuss the basics of mordanting (preparing the fabrics/fixing the colors), the chemical relationships and toxicity in the dyeing process. We learn about the criticism of fast fashion and the return to the craft of DIY and the art of fermentation.
During the time we have to wait (pickling/steaming), we will collect plants, learn how to identify them using an app and also learn some recipes for preserving vegetables for the winter months or simply giving them a tasty twist.
We use food waste and also experiment with peels and existing, coloring plant stock. During the break we will enjoy a tasting of fermented wild herbs and probiotic lactic acid products and learn how to use them.
You can print 1-2 pieces of clothing or fabric during the course and take home a jar of fine pickled vegetables.
Bring along: White textiles of any natural fiber. 1 - 2 pieces. There are fabrics available on site that can be purchased for 5-10 CHF.
1 - 2 clean preserving jars of 2-3 dl.
