African band weaving with weavers of the Ivory Coast and  POPLIN PROJECT

Saturday 31st August 12- 17:00
& Sunday 1st September 11- 16:00

Band weaving is deeply rooted in West African culture and history. Each ribbon tells a story and symbolizes important cultural and social values. The patterns and designs represent identity, wealth and prestige within the community.

Weaving fascinates with its complex geometric patterns and designs, which are created by cleverly arranging different colored stripes into symmetrical motifs.

In this workshop, two experienced weavers from a cooperative in the north of Côte d'Ivoire will introduce you to the art of West African band weaving. You will make your own ribbon on easy-to-use looms while being guided step by step through the work process.

Although the weavers mainly speak French, they can also communicate a little in German thanks to their experience in German-speaking Switzerland and their work with children.

The weavers
The two instructors come from the cooperative of the village of Waranienie, located in the commune of Korhogo in the north of Côte d'Ivoire. This village, also known as the village of weavers, is famous for its talented artisans and the unique hand-woven fabrics that are produced there.

POPLIN PROJECT
Poplin Project is a socially engaged slow culture label that promotes sustainable development through craftsmanship and celebrates the diversity and uniqueness of handmade textiles. For years, Poplin Project has worked closely with the talented weavers of Waranienie.

Be inspired by the rich tradition of West African weaving and experience a creative and culturally enriching adventure!
