TUFTING WORKSHOP — With Jana Holland from the Tufting Club

Tuft a mini rug or a fluffy wall decor! Tufting is originally a technique for making rugs. Using a tufting gun, yarn is shot through a canvas to create a 3D surface. You can create rugs, wall hangings, fashion, and design objects.

In this 4-hour workshop, you will learn how to stretch a canvas, how the different tufting guns work, and you will receive links to tufting websites, guides, and material sources. You will also make your own small tufting piece of approximately 35x35 cm. Finally, you will learn how to finish your tufting, and you can take it home with you that evening. We exclusively work with organic sheep wool, produced in a family-run wool mill in Graubünden.

The founder of Tufting Club, Talaya Schmid, lives as an independent queer-feminist textile and performance artist in Zurich. She studied at Goldsmiths University of London, was the publishing director and editor of the comic magazine Strapazin, and co-founded the film and art festival Porny Days in Zurich.

Bring along: It’s best to bring a sketch (35x35 cm) to have more time for tufting and detail work!
No prior knowledge required.
The workshop will be held in German and/or English.

BIKINI WORKSHOP – THE CROCHET / KNITTING PROJECT FOR THE POOL — With textile designer Valerie Ehrenbold

In this workshop, you can design and create your own bikini. You will develop your project step by step with guidance.

Together, we will choose the material and pattern, and you will decide whether to crochet or knit your bikini set, complement it with fabric scraps, or mix techniques. You will receive an introduction to the essential techniques and tips to successfully complete your project. You will learn tricks on how to take your measurements correctly and make individual adjustments.

Depending on your pace, you will progress to different stages – but don't worry. By the end of the workshop, you will have an almost finished piece in your hands and will have all the necessary skills and tools to complete it independently. Valerie Ehrenbold is a textile designer and costume designer with a special focus on sustainable design. In her work, she delves deeply into the effects of color, the texture of textiles, and the creative use of different materials. A central aspect of her artistic practice is the conscious use of scrap and second-hand materials, as well as bringing traditional craft techniques into a modern, sustainable form.

SPRAY IT UP! With textile designer Franziska Born

Do you have a stained garment or a boring pillowcase that you want to spice up? With the spray printing and stenciling technique, you can easily work on existing textiles.

As an introduction, the instructor will present her project “Zanolli Revived”: a reenactment of the design practices of the "Atelier Zanolli." The Zanolli family, between 1926 and 1939, created a variety of fabric creations on silk with spray guns and stencils in their in-house craft workshop in Zurich.

In the workshop, you will apply this agile technique as an upcycling method. The spray gun can be freely controlled, and it can flexibly react to existing substrates. The transparent colors adhere to light, even pre-patterned surfaces, from cotton, linen, polyester to leather. The cardboard stencils serve as a starting point—how they are placed and sprayed is your decision and makes the result unique. You will first practice handling various spray guns and discover what can be done with or without stencils. To top it off, you will give your brought object a new look.

Franziska Born studied textile design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Zurich and works as a designer in various contexts. She designs costume images for the stage, textile products for people and spaces, non-textile designs, and color concepts for architecture, and she even works on leather sofas with a spray gun. Since 2005, she has been a lecturer and mentor at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Design Film Art and has shaped the textile design program there.

Bring along: Work clothes and a textile object you want to work on (a garment, pillowcase, tablecloth, napkin, fabric bag, cotton, linen, polyester, polyamide fabric, leather is also possible).
No prior knowledge required.

THE BLUE HOUR: SHIBORI DYEING WITH INDIGO – With fashion and textile designer Lilla Wicki

The Japanese Shibori dyeing art with indigo includes a wide range of techniques. In this workshop, we will experiment with fabric manipulations to create organic patterns and kaleidoscopic designs when dyeing with natural indigo.

Shibori is a Japanese manual dyeing technique that creates a variety of patterns on fabrics. In this workshop, we will explore the history of indigo dyeing and experiment with different fabric manipulations such as folding, clamping, binding, and stitching. This process creates organic patterns and kaleidoscopic designs on the fabric when dyeing with natural indigo. We will first experiment with small test pieces and then dye a cotton scarf using the desired technique.

All tools and materials for dyeing and experimenting will be provided. Please note that indigo stains! Dress accordingly.

Lilla Wicki is a fashion and textile designer with diverse interests and a broad working area. In her personal search for a more sustainable textile future, Lilla's design process is inspired by what already exists: artistic vintage materials that are lying dormant in archives! Lilla's professional path began at Central Saint Martin's College of Art & Design in London with a diploma in Fashion Design Women's Wear, followed by a ten-year work stint in Paris and New York. Today, Lilla works as an independent designer in Zurich. Reflection, collaboration, and conscious creation are at the core of her practice.
